This was inspired by the feeling of Racial Disparities
There are hidden figures in this painting represents the different feelings and place including a dark place and lower self-worth.
I came to this country with my family after finishing primary school in North Cyprus.
I was so happy there, had a lot of friends, and had to leave my friends behind, I can still keep in touch with my friends through phone as there wasn’t any internet those days, but I was still really upset.
At the same time I was looking forward to starting secondary school in the UK and making new friends although that my English wasn’t the best, but friend will accept you the way you are right?
Wrong!
When I started secondary school, no one wanted to be my friend. I had to get extra help in and out of lessons to improve my English.
The other kids were mean, I got bullied, I got ignored, I didn’t get chosen to be in a team,
I didn’t want to stay here, I wanted to go back to my real friends,
I didn’t get good grades,
All because my English wasn’t good, all because no one wanted to be my friend, no one wanted to help me,
And all these had a negative effect on my well-being,
It upset me a lot, I felt like my feelings didn’t matter, I didn’t matter
This was a dark place,
I cried a lot in silence and told no one.
No one accepted me as their friend apart from the kids that was in the same boat as I was.
I was even assigned to help another kid that just came into the country, but how was I supposed to do this when I couldn’t communicate, in English, myself.
The racism didn’t stop even after secondary school.
People treat you differently just because you have an accent, just because you look different.
On the phone, Face to face,
It doesn’t matter!
Please consider others feelings when being racist and teach your children not to be, to help, friend, not bully
Just because that person cant communicate or cry in front of you, it doesn’t mean they don’t feel any emotions inside!

I painted the background black first, then did the woman and her hair in white.
This painting is inspired by the different emotions I was going through after giving birth, postpartum depression (PPD) baby blues, trying to change my hair to feel more in control and boost my self-esteem.
When I was a little girl, I loved looking after my dolls, feeding them, changing, washing them, reading stories to them, it was so easy.
I got married and couldn’t wait to start a family.
When I found out I was pregnant I was so happy although I had morning sickness but that didn’t matter because we was going to have a bundle of joy.
I was so lucky that I bonded with my bump even before he was born, I used to talk, read stories and put on music for us to listen to.
After I gave birth, I didn’t eat or sleep much,
I had extreme sadness. low energy and low self-esteem,
Constant crying of the baby, sleepless nights, pains, not eating right,
My baby refusing to be breastfed and the pressure to breastfeed was impacting on my mental health while having ppd,
Looking after a baby wasn’t as easy as I imagined, and no one talked to me about it either.
But I had to stay strong, for me and my baby,
I wanted this, I could do this!
